CHOOSING THE RIGHT SYSTEM FOR MY NEEDS

Basically there are three kinds of softeners available:

 Single tank demand (Metered)
 Twin tank demand (Metered)
 Timered

A "Demand" or "Metered" unit will automatically measure the water usage and clean the mineral tank only when necessary, using less water and salt to clean the system. Such a system requires little attention.

The Twin-tank demand unit offers the same advantages as the single-tank, however, should be considered when the demand for water usage will be greater. The additional tank allows for continuous soft water. While one tank cleans itself, the other provides the soft water. For 24 hours a day of continuous soft water.

The Timered unit is popular because of its cost; however, it is not suitable for every situation. A Timered unit will regenerate at a pre-set number of days, regardless of the need, or lack of. These units will soften the water, but can get costly in the long run because of water and salt usage.

There are many companies that sell water treatment equipment, including department stores. Though, all may soften the water to some degree, there are certain factors to keep in mind when making your decision.

  • Size: Every household is different and an effective unit should be sized accordingly. Under sizing can be costly and generally ineffective.
  • Type: Some units on the market are "self-contained", meaning, that the resin tank (with the main control valve) is inside the salt tank. Keep in mind that salt and moisture don't make a good combination. Having grown up in Galveston, I've seen the corrosive effect of these two ingredients together.
  • Cost: Department store units, for the most part sound less expensive up front. However, their cost does not include installation, salt or soft water faucet (good to wash your car with). Also most department stores charge extra for extended warranties which are standard with our units. These factors should all be taken into account when comparing units.
